Today, his initiative, Drupal, is being used by top houses such as MTV, Harvard, White House, etc. to make their websites run. Buytaert recently shared his viewpoints on open source and its success till date and days to come. Here are some excerpts from the interview.

What according to you is the main reason behind the success of an open project?

In Drupal’s case, the success story is because of the people who have tremendous contributions in this project. The community comprises a large number of developers and all of them have played a major role in designing modules. On an estimate, the website has as much as 7000 modules. It is the hard work of these people that gets us reach new heights.

What methodology did you follow to form such a strong and big community of people?

My association with Drupal is for 10 years. To build this big community, I used no quick-rich methodology or formula. It actually took me 10 years to form this community and take Drupal to where it stands today. A lot of offline events played an important role in bringing in bonding in the community. Such events comprised Drupal conferences and meet ups.

What made you build Drupal as one open source project?

My thought on Drupal was based on two reasons—first, I wanted to gather more knowledge about MySQL and PHP 10 years ago; and second, I was in need to a message board. This was when I realized that to build that message board I should use PHP and in turn, learn more about these practices. To the basic framework, I made a lot of additions in terms of features such as blogging (called public diaries then). For me, this platform called Drupal was in fact an experimental platform that I used to try my hands on various technologies.

Because public interaction brought in lot of suggestions and improvements, I thought of building the source code for this website as open source.

You are the leading brain behind Drupal. On the other hand, you are also the co-founder of Acquia. Acquia sells services and products in relation to Drupal. What makes you balance both these things?

I don’t see any challenge in both these things because I see them as one. What works best for Drupal will ultimately also work best for Acquia. Unless and until Drupal becomes successful, Acquia will never taste success.
