That’s a project for this coming September! It’s also incredibly difficult to give an accurate “taste” of one of my presentations without including any of the “stories” that make them up…but I didn’t want to post them online and give them all away! OTZMA is a 10-month service-based, leadership development program offering Jewish young adults, ages 20-26, the opportunity to create their own service experience in Israel. Participants spend three months learning Hebrew, three months volunteering in small communities based on their interests and the needs of the communities, and three months participating in a customized internship or kibbutz volunteer experience. A high rate of HIV & AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections combined with a lack of leadership to address the crisis in Haiti’s Cite Soleil area have resulted in a large population of disaffected youth who believe that this situation is hope¬less. As part of Management Sciences for Health’s “Leadership Development Program” funded by USAID in 2009, young participants from the Haitian NGO Maison l’Arc-en-Ciel (MAEC) learned that they can make a difference.
